THE PHOENIX CHARTER

The Chicago Loop · begins and ends at City Hall
Three chapters · 18 stops · pause anytime
Best for groups of 2–5 · a walking mystery

In 1871, Chicago burned to the ground — and almost nobody knows why it really happened. One man did. He left a journal, and a trail through the city's streets, and then one day he walked out to finish his work and never came home. No one knows what happened to him. His grandson has the journal now. He needs your help to solve this mystery.

Before you begin — a word. The clues you will be looking for were left by people who wanted them seen and not noticed — best done in daylight. Mid-morning to early afternoon is the sweet spot. Expect that some doors may be closed to you. They were closed to most people for a hundred years, and the clues kept their place regardless. Every riddle on this trail can be answered from the street.
